Biodiversity and Conservation of The Meliau Range: A Rain Forest in Sabah’s Ultramafic Belt
The Meliau Range in central Sabah has often been confused with the Maliau Basin in south central Sabah, but both are equally rich in biodiversity and important to the environmental heritage of Sabah. The Meliau Range is home to predominantly ultramafic forests, which are little studied ecosystems. In 2003, an NGO, a private company and a government agency came together to pool conservation efforts by initiating the Meliau Range Conservation Programme. The first part of this book details the work that has been carried out in this programme. The second part of the book introduces the plants and wildlife found in the forests of the Meliau Range. There is also discussion of the people who have traditionally lived on the fringes of the Range and the possible gains from having designated it a conservation area.
